Atmosphere : Adele - Someone Like You

Within the music video for 'Adele - Someone Like You', is a perfect example of how an atmosphere is created and sustained throughout the whole video.
The use of black and white film creates a sense of sadness and depression which is then complemented with the tone of the song itself but also the meaning, love and heartbreak. These combined, complement and create an atmosphere upon the viewer. Giving sympathy towards the singer as she looks upset. Adele throughout the first verse, doesn't look directly into the camera, this could suggest that she isn't comfortable with interaction with other people, lulling in self pity, avoiding eye contact with the camera/viewer. As the chorus starts, Adele then looks directly at the camera, building that connection with the viewer, as you can see the sadness within her eyes. This direct mode of address is then emphasised the word 'you' within the chorus, as Adele looks directly back towards the camera, a rhetorical question for the audience perhaps. Adele has been place in a black mac coat, this could connect to how she is feeling emotionally but also physically. As black hides features, this could suggest she is now become self conscious. As Adele's hands stay by her side in her pockets throughout the music video, an exception to control loose hairs behind her ears, is a common comfort act within females. The slow pace of the song is further complemented by the slow pan of the camera revolving around Adele, close ups of Adele's face, to show facial expressions of sadness but furthermore, the viewer can recognise the singer from the star image which has been created. Complemented with the walking speed of Adele walking down the promenade of Paris. As you would think, this famous location should be full of pedestrians as it is broad daylight. This emphasises Adele's loneliness that she is feeling, complemented but the song lyrics. A slow pan going away from the focus of Adele, establishes the location, emphasising how lonely this place is and how lonely she is feeling.
