Analysis of a Digipack and Advert

As Slipknot was a main band inspiration we had for our music video, we felt it was needed to analyse and look at their style in digipack and poster design. For this particular digipack, many aspects of the design help with promotion and meet the codes and conventions of stereotypical elements of a product within this genre.
Such as the use of the colour red. This suggests an evil and darkness to the digipack as the colour red connects with blood. This furthermore associates with pain and death. These are all common factors within this genre of Rock/Metal that are stereotypically used. This could be connected for target audience purposes as that is what they would want to see within a music video within that genre and followed on with the promotional side of the digipack and poster. Centrally composed is an image/ photo of the band itself.
This is for star image purposes as it establishes the band itself and the people within it. The bar background behind the figures suggest a prison. This signifies conflict and distress of an individual which may give a assumption about the band. A fish eye or wide angle lens, has been used to take this photo as you can tell by the bars as they curve inwards. This is to establish more of the surroundings, this could emphasis the fact of how many memebers of the band there are as they are crammed within the photo. Furthermore, all the members are in red clothing, this emphasises the blood and death aspect but also they look like a prisoners uniform. This establishes and confirms the setting of the photo being a prison cell and that the bars are in fact prison bars. This is emphasised by the many vertical black lines over the red background of the design around the photo. Star image is set as the typography, known as 'Slipknot's' logo, makes the digipack recognisable for the audience to purchase. This extends to the spine of the digipack as the 'S' symbol associated with Slipknot is used along side with the full logo.

With this digipack was a promotional advert for this digipack but also advertising concerts that would include tracks off this particular album. This clear connect is made by using same aspects from the digipack itself on the poster. This such as the the imagery used on the from of the digipack has been used within the centre of the advert, composed as it is on the digipack. Also the composition of the typography of the 'Slipknot' logo is the same, this establishes the viewer what band it is. Other typography on the bottom half of the poster, the more illegible type appears to be names of the specific tracks they would be performing at this concert, this could suggest that they are tracks from this specific digipack. Other typography are more legible as they are key information for promotional purposes. A final connection to the advert and digipack is the black and red vertical lines used.

Furthermore into my research I found merchandise for this particular digipack and poster. This is common within the genre of this band, most commonly at concerts/ gigs. This shows that the advert promoted the band and merchandise was made. This furthermore promotes the band and specific album by making the band/ star image/ product more recognisable as fans would wear these.
